The New Jersey Devils have re-signed 40 year-old winger Brendan
Shanahan to a 1-year deal. After spending the first few months of last season looking for a team located close to his home in New York to offer him a contract (Devils and
Flyers were the only teams interested),
Shanahan joined New Jersey and scored 14 points in 34 games.
This time the
NHL's active leading goal scorer will have a chance to spend an entire season in Newark.
Shanny felt he had unfinished business with the Devils after they were eliminated in Game 7 of the playoffs' first round last year. He was not the old Brendan
Shanahan last year, but still showed that he can provide some offensive help along with his great leadership both on and off the ice. And with only a 1-year deal, even if he struggles, it won't hurt New Jersey like their disastrous 4-year/$20 million deal to Brian
Rolston who scored just 32 points in 64 games in his first year in the Garden State last season.
For his career,
Shanahan has 656 goals and 698 assists in 1,524 games.
