Halladay to Philly would be nail in the coffin for Mets

No one knows for sure if Toronto GM J.P. Ricciardi is serious about dealing franchise ace Roy Halladay. But if the rumors are true, than the Philadelphia Phillies are the front runner for his services. And if the two clubs can work out a deal and Halladay lifts his no-trade clause, the Mets shot at catching the Phillies in the division would surely come to an end.

Halladay is having another stellar season for the Blue Jays, with a 10-2 record and a tidy 2.79 ERA. Not to mention a 98/17 K/BB ratio. Toronto would surely ask for the world for their franchise star, but Philly has the riches in their minors to make it happen. ESPN Minor League writer Keith Law named the Phillies the 11th best farm system in his annual organization rankings earlier this year, stating the following:

"Philadelphia Phillies: This system has improved dramatically in the past year, in particular because of the emergence of two tools guys, Dominic Brown and Michael Taylor, who weren’t really on the radar last winter. The system could make a big move up if a few high-risk/high-reward picks from this year pan out."

Here are the Phillies top 5 prospects, according to ScoutingBook.com:

1. Carlos Carrasco RHP
2. Antonio Bastardo LHP
3. Joe Savery LHP
4. Lou Marson C
5. Dominic Brown OF

Already 4 1/2 games out in the NL East, the former Cy Young Award winner would give the Phillies a great one two punch of Halladay and last seasons world series MVP Cole Hamels. Along with J.A. Happ, Joe Blanton, and Jamie Moyer, Philly would have a much better staff than the Mets. And everyone knows how much better their lineup already is. If the Mets have any dreams of treading water and staying alive in the division race, Omar Minaya better hope that Halladay doesn't land in the city of brotherly love.
