A Thrilla by Godzilla

"It is high, it is far, it is gone!" John Sterling had the call for Hideki Matsui's walk-off homerun tonight, his 15th of the season, as the Yankees won their 3rd straight 2-1 game and fourth overall. Matsui lined a a 2-2 pitch into the right-field seats off Orioles reliever Jim Johnson (3-4) for his second game-ending homer in the majors - the other was as a rookie on July 17, 2003, against Cleveland.

The Yankees got their fourth consecutive solid outing from their starting pitcher, as Andy Pettitte was superb. The lefty didn't record the win, but went 7 1/3, allowed just one run on six hits, and struck out eight batters. The only run he allowed came in the first inning, a solo homerun off the bat of Nick Markakis. If the Yankees can get solid outings from the back end of their rotation like they did tonight and last night, they won't need to make a trade for another starting pitcher. The first Yankee run came in the second inning, when Eric Hinske crushed a fastball that went off the Modell's sign in rightfield. It was the third homerun in a Yankeee uniform for the former AL Rookie of the Year.

The Yankees are now 55-37, and are now tied with Boston atop the AL East after the Red Sox lost tonight 6-3 to the Rangers. Game two tomorrow against the Orioles features Sergio Mitre making his first start for New York. Mitre takes the rotation spot of Chien-Ming Wang, who apparently had a setback to his right shoulder injury. It is uncertain if Wang will pitch again this season.
.
Not much else to say - the Yankees are rolling right now, having won four straight games to start the second half. There is nothing to complain about right now in Yankee universe.
